Environmental policy

Environmental issues continue to lie at high on the agenda for businesses and organizations. No longer are these questions considered as “just” possible competitive advantages, but rather as absolute givens. The concern is to minimise environmental impact, finding and presenting factors that affect both global and local environments. It is also about involving employees and other interested parties, and taking our responsibility for this generation and for the future.

The world’s biggest ski race cannot, of course, avoid environmental impact, but we continue to work in an extremely engaged and structured manner, to live up to our reputation as a pioneer in sporting events.

Vasaloppet has received the distinction of “Environmental Award for Events” no less than seven times. Above all we work with transportation of people and materials. Our ski competitions involve tens of thousands of participants, and this inevitably results in environmental impact. Special chartered trains, busses to the start areas, and active management of garbage and waste are important components of Vasaloppet’s environmental work.

Stiftelsen Håll Sverige Rent (Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation)
The Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation is a creator of public opinion that promotes recycling and combats litter through public awareness campaigns, awards and environmental education. The Foundation strives to influence people's attitudes and behavior in order to encourage a sustainable development. The vision is that Sweden will be the world’s cleanest land!

Environmental Award for Events
The criteria that the Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation has set up for this distinction are similar to that of a simplified environmental management system. It provides guidelines and support for structured environmental work, setting criteria in a total of eight different areas.

Vasaloppet’s Environmental Policy
As one of the world’s biggest sporting event organizers, Vasaloppet will be a leader and role model with respect to the environment. We will profile Vasaloppet as an events organizer placing environmental considerations at the centre of all activities throughout the year. We want the entire organization to be involved in environmental work and that all our employees and officials weigh in environmental concerns in decisions taken.

Successively, Vasaloppet’s environmental impact will be reduced by conscious choice and we shall:
- train and inform as many as possible within the organisation regarding environmental work
- seek cooperation and exchange with other environmental interests
- take into account environmental aspects when selecting cooperation partners, striving to choose those products and services with proven environmental friendly performance
- seek to limit our transportation environmental impact as far as possible
- save energy and, where possible, use renewable energy sources, and minimize waste & garbage
- comply with relevant environmental legislation and regulations, and other environmental requirements
- evaluate and improve our environmental performance through a planned structured work scheme
