Vasaloppet’s 2012 Winter Week is drawing near. Vasaloppet, TjejVasan and StafettVasan have long been fully booked, but there are start places still available in six other events. Those who still consider taking part in KortVasan, HalvVasan or Sunday’s Öppet Spår would be wise to sign up almost at once, since the remaining number of start places will quickly diminish now that the snow and cold has arrived.
KortVasan has now broken its previous registration record. In 2011 there were 8,186 registered entries and, so far, for this year’s race, which opens Vasaloppet’s Winter Week on Friday 24 February, there are 8,412 entries. This means that there are just 1,600 places available.
“Breaking participant records is, of course, satisfying but we’re at least as much pleased that so very many choose to exercise and train to take up the challenges our events present,” says Jonas Bauer, Vasaloppets CEO.
HalvVasan has also 1,600 places left, whilst in Sunday’s Öppet Spår there remain only 1,400 places. The table below has details of the current situation race by race.
There is today snow over the whole distance from Sälen to Mora with varied snow depth, just now between 15 to 30 centimetres. Artificial snow has been driven out this week between the Mora ski stadium and Eldris. This “snow insurance”, which was also done before last year’s races, is to safeguard the track quality since artificial snow has better holding qualities than natural snow. Moreover Vasaloppet has 50,000 cubic metres artificial snow already manufactured as a backup in the Oxberg snow factory.
