Swedish cyclists beat the Swedish professionals in CykelVasan

It was local Swedish MTB cyclists who, on Saturday, beat the Swedish professionals in the second CykelVasan, 90 km over the classic distance from Sälen to Mora where, in winter, the Vasaloppet ski race is run. Over 4,000 cyclists started in Sweden’s biggest mountainbike race ever.
The men’s competition was won by Magnus Darvell who, at the end, overtook Emil Lindgren, who fell at the final curve. Lindgren, who competes for the international Rabobank-Giant Team, had bad luck even last year, when he had a puncture and came in sixth. Third time lucky in 2011? The 2009 winner, Mathias Wengelin, who this year made his debut for the German Firebike Team, had to give in to hard competition and this year came in 13th place.
The ladies’ class was won by the young Swede Emmy Thelberg, ahead of the professional Alexandra Engen, who competes for the German Cube-Rothaus. Alexandra Engen had led the race for a very long time but collapsed towards the end.
Participation had more than doubled from the 2009 premier year and, this year, 4,043 cyclists made it to the CykelVasan finish, making it Sweden’s biggest mountainbike race ever. Together they biked a distance equivalent to fully 8.3 round the world trips!
Amongst the participants was again the three times Vasaloppet winner, Daniel Tynell, who, last year, came in 13th in CykelVasan. This year the Swedish skier came in 27th , in spite of biking almost ten minutes faster this time – evidence enough perhaps of the tough competition at the top, and that the leader group was really very fast.
The Norwegian MTB veteran, Rune Höydahl, who has won several World Cup competitions, praised CykelVasan as the most well organised cycle race in which he had taken part. Next year, he’s coming back, and bringing with him more Norwegians!
