Ahead of Cykelvasan 2022 – SVT broadcasts live

Cykelvasan premiered in 2009, as did the Vasaloppet Summer Week, and over 170,000 cyclists to date have crossed the finish line under the classic portal in Mora. Just like in Vasaloppet, both elite and recreational athletes participate in Cykelvasan.

Cykelvasan consists of multiple different races:
Friday 12 August: Cykelvasan Öppet Spår, 94 km, start Sälen 09:00 (leisure race)
Friday 12 August: Cykelvasasprinten, 1 km, Lindvallen, Sälen, 16:00 (invitation race)
Saturday 13 August: Cykelvasan 90, 94 km, start Sälen 07:30/08:15/08:30 (competition/leisure classes)
Sunday 14 August: Ungdomscykelvasan, 32 km, start Oxberg 08:30 (competition)
Sunday 14 August: Cykelvasan 30, 32 km, start Oxberg 09:30 (leisure race)
Sunday 14 August: Cykelvasan 45, 45 km, start Oxberg 11:45 (leisure race)

Also held for children aged 3–10:
Barnens Vasalopp bike in Sälen Thursday, August 11 and Friday, August 12.

Vasaloppet’s Summer Week then continues on August 19–20 with the individual running races Trailvasan 10, Trailvasan 30, Ultravasan 45, Ultravasan 90 and the running relay races Vasastafetten and Vasakvartetten. There is also the children’s race Barnens Vasalopp running.

Counties and nations 2022
All Swedish counties have registrants in Cykelvasan 2022. Most are from Västra Götaland, Stockholm, Dalarna, Skåne and Uppsala.

Cykelvasan’s various 2022 races have participants from 31 different nations, including Sweden. The five most represented nations (excluding Sweden) are Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Great Britain. Upwards of 500 Norwegian participants are registered.

Participants in Cykelvasan 2022 are aged between 7 and 87! The average age is 46.0 years. (County, country, and age statistics are from Monday, 2022-08-08.)

CYKELVASAN 90 ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 2022
Cykelvasan 90 starts at the classic Vasaloppet start in Sälen and the race runs by all the classic Vasaloppet checkpoints. A total of 94 km of forest roads and wooden decking over bogs, through bright pine forests, past summer pastures and meadows down to the finish portal in Mora. The elite women in Cykelvasan 90 start at 07:30 and the elite men start at 08:15, while the leisure class start groups set off every five minutes, starting at 08:30.

There are about 60 women registered for Cykelvasan 90’s competition class, while the men’s competition class has about 450 registered. (The Cykelvasan races 2022 has a total of 16,000 registered participants so far. Registering is possible all the way up until the start.)

Elites – who will win? Will the victory wreath go to Sweden and/or Norway?
When the Swedish XCM Marathon Championship 2022 was held in connection with Finnmarksturen (81 km) on July 31, previous victors were dethroned in both the women’s and men’s class. Both reigning Swedish champions had to give in: Jennie Stenerhag (who won nine Swedish championships in a row) and Matthias Wengelin. The blue-and-yellow Swedish Championship jerseys will be worn by Nellie Larsson and Emil Lindgren from now on. Nellie won the Swedish Championship, crossing the finish line two minutes ahead of Jennie, while Emil beat Jakob Söderqvist and David Risberg in the sprint. (However, Emil did not win Finnmarksturen; first and second were Norwegian Emil Hasund Eid and Eskil Evensen-Lie.)

Jennie Stenerhag, however, secured her first place in Långloppscupen 2022 via Finnmarksturen, even though there’s one competition remaining. In the men’s total, Johan Norén holds the lead ahead of Matthias Wengelin and Emil Lindgren. Wengelin is, however, suffering from a knee injury and won’t be starting in Cykelvasan.

Last year, Cykelvasan Elit 2021 saw a sprint showdown in the women’s class with seven cyclists crossing the finish line within three seconds. Emma Belforth came onto the finish stretch at the Zorn museum first and there was a gap down to the rest, but she was overtaken at the belfry and Jennie Stenerhag won her fifth Cykelvasan victory. Hildegunn Gjertrud Hovdenak came second and Nellie Larsson third. In the men’s class, however, Norwegian Kristian Klevgård could parade across the finish line alone as the winner. He was on his own from Hökberg, and he won Norway’s first ever men’s class victory in Cykelvasan!

Cykelvasan 2022 has two previous victors in the ladies’ class, with a combined seven victories:
Hildegunn Gjertrud Hovdenak, Norway, winner of Cykelvasan 2014 and 2018, and Jennie Stenerhag, Falu CK, winner of Cykelvasan 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021.

Hildegunn and Jennie, together with Nellie Larsson, are three very experienced candidates for victory. Anne Helene Reiten is another Norwegian contender, having participated in European and World Championships already. And what might young Tilda Hylén do? She is a junior (born 2004) and came third in the 2022 Swedish Championship after Nellie and Jennie. Terese Andersson surely wants revenge; she was first to finish but was disqualified…

The men’s competition class in Cykelvasan 2022 has many impressive cyclists to spice things up, including a lot of Norwegians. Defending champion Klevgård, who mainly bikes on roads, made his mountain bike debut this year by winning Sjusjørittet on July 30. He’s participating in Cykelvasan to defend his title: ”I must try to defend it as best I can. It will be all the more difficult this year, but I will really try,” said Kristian Klevgård to kondis.no.

New finish line portal and area
Last winter, all the recreational athletes got to ski in under the new finish line portal on level with the belfry, approximately 100 meters before the old finish line. The new finish line area was positively reviewed in the participant survey after Vasaloppet’s Winter Week 2022, and it’s now time for the summer participants to experience the same.

This year’s Kranskulla and Kransmas are Wilma Björkman (IFK Mora) and Edvin Nilsson (Sälens IF).

Award ceremony
Sprint prizes (3,000 SEK) are awarded to the first cyclists in the women’s and men’s classes to pass the checkpoints in Smågan, Mångsbodarna, Risberg, Oxberg, Hökberg and Eldris. A hill prize (5,000 SEK) is awarded to the first man and woman to reach Evertsberg. To receive the sprint prize and hill prize, the participant must complete the race. Garlands to the winners and placement medals to the top three. Training scholarships go to the first six women and the first ten men in the competition class. The 2022 first prize in both the women’s and men’s classes is 40,000 SEK. Prizes will be awarded in the finish area in Mora at 13:00. (Flower ceremony already at 11:05.)

Together with SVT, Vasaloppet.TV broadcasts Cykelvasan 90 with presenter Martin Sellberg and expert commentator Roberto Vacchi on location in Mora. Cycling reporters Marcus Ljungqvist and Fredrik Dahl are in the arena, following the women’s and men’s elites respectively. Anders Ekh is in the arena for exciting reports and interviews. After the elite have crossed the finish line, the broadcast will follow all other participants as they complete their race. There are also fixed cameras at the start, finish and at all seven checkpoints.

Sunday, August 14 at 08:20.
Vasaloppet.TV will broadcast Ungdomscykelvasan starting at 08:20. Martin Sellberg is in Mora together with expert commentator Anders Ekh. Viktoria Stärner will be at the start for interviews and preparations before the start. We’ll see the first Cykelvasan 30 start at 09:30 and the Cykelvasan 45 start at 11:30. During the day we get to follow participants from Oxberg to Mora with reports and interviews. There are also fixed cameras at the start, finish and at all seven checkpoints.

Most wins and top 3 placements
18 cyclists have taken home the 24 Cykelvasan victories since the start in 2009. Jennie Stenerhag has won five times, Hildegunn Gjertrud Hovdenak twice and Jesper Dahlström twice.

The men’s class only saw Swedish victories up until 2021 when Norwegian Kristian Klevgård won. In the women’s class there have been four foreign wins (Norwegian and Finnish).

Jennie Stenerhag has been in the top three eight times; as for the men, Emil Lindgren and Matthias Wengelin each have six top three spots.

Emil Lindgren can brag that he’s been in the top 10 more than anyone: 10 times, to be exact! Matthias Wengelin has been in the top 10 nine times and Hanna Bergman has done it eight times.

FACTS Cykelvasan’s development year by year
2009: The first ever Cykelvasan 30, Cykelvasan 45 and Cykelvasan 90. The terms ”Vasaloppet Winter Week” and ”Vasaloppet Summer Week” are coined. With near 2,000 participants, Cykelvasan immediately becomes Sweden’s biggest mountain bike race.
2010: Cykelvasasprinten ran for the first time in Lindvallen. Barnens Vasalopp on bike (originally called Barnens Cykelvasa) for young children has also been arranged since 2010.
2011: The start in Sälen moves from Tjärnhedens IP to the Vasaloppet start in Berga by.
2012: Ungdomscykelvasan starts, a competition for youths aged 11–16 (run on the same course as Cykelvasan 30).
2015: Cykelvasan Öppet Spår is introduced, based on the winter version of Öppet Spår.
2016: First time the women’s class start in Cykelvasan 90 takes place before the men’s class start (previously there was a joint start).
2017: First year the race runs completely off roads with traffic.
2018: Cykelvasan’s races are distributed across three different days.
2019: Last time that elite and recreational athletes could participate together.
2020: Cykelvasan was part of Hemmavasan due to the pandemic.
2021: Cykelvasan Elit ran while others could complete Hemmavasan Cykel.
2022: Recreational athletes back again. SVT live broadcast.
