Ahead of Ultravasan, Trailvasan and Vasastafetten 2023

Over 5,300 runners will take to the Vasaloppet Arena this weekend as Vasaloppet's Summer Week 2023 concludes with five running races. Participants include both elite and recreational runners from 28 nations, registered for the four individual races and the relay race Vasastafetten. Many of the individual runners also aim to complete this year's Vasaloppstrippeln. Ultravasan 90 and Vasastafetten will have a new route at the start in Sälen this year. Here are facts, favourites, statistics, and trivia ahead of the upcoming races.

Registration can still be completed at vasaloppet.se up until Thursday, August 17. Late registration (with a slightly higher fee) opens on Friday, August 18 at 10:00 at the race office in Mora and 12:00 at the race office in Sälen. On the day of the races, you can register on location at the start areas.

There are five different running races. It all starts on Friday evening at 18:00 with Trailvasan 10, a 10 km leisure race starting and finishing at the Vasaloppet finish line in Mora. On Saturday, August 19, Ultravasan 90, Ultravasan 45, Trailvasan 30, and Vasastafetten will take place. A total of nine classes (of which eight are competitive) will run on Saturday:

Ultravasan 90. 92 km. Starts in Sälen at 05:00.
Ultravasan 90 km, like the traditional Vasaloppet, starts in Sälen and follows the route east towards Mora. Two classes: Women and Men.

Ultravasan 45. 45 km. Starts in Oxberg at 09:00.
Ultravasan 45 km starts in Oxberg and largely follows the winter route of Vasaloppet 45 along the Oxbergssjön lake to Vasslan, before joining the Ultravasan 90 course. Two classes: Women and Men.

– Trailvasan 30. 30 km. Starts in Oxberg at 11:30.
Trailvasan 30 km starts in Oxberg and runs on forest roads and trails, through summer pastures and pine forests, passing checkpoints in Oxberg, Hökberg, and Eldris before reaching Mora. Two classes: Women and Men.

– Vasastafetten. Relay race for teams of ten. Starts in Sälen at 09:00.
92 km from Sälen to Mora, divided into ten sections ranging from 4.5 to 15 km. (Vasastafetten has three classes: Women, Men, and Leisure. In the women’s and men’s classes, cash prizes are awarded. Men = Women are allowed. Women = Women only. Leisure = Any number of women and men. In the leisure class, participants are allowed to run multiple sections.)

This year, both Ultravasan 90 and Vasastafetten are going to be two kilometres longer, thanks to the new route at the start which takes participants up the first hill, just like skiers in winter and cyclists in Cykelvasan. After the start, the route follows a scenic forest road along the Västerdalälven river, crosses a main road, and continues on a forest road with gravel, climbing about three kilometres up to Vasaloppet’s highest point 528 metres above sea level. From there, it winds an occasionally rocky path along the Vasaloppet trail for a few kilometres. The final two kilometres before the checkpoint in Smågan, reached after 11.2 kilometres, are on a gravel road.
More information about sections and terrain >

”Ultra” denotes races longer than the marathon distance of 42,195 metres, and ”trail” or ”terrain” signifies that most of the race takes place on surfaces other than asphalt.

In addition to the above races, on Friday, August 18, in Mora (16:00) and Sälen (18:00), ”Barnens Vasalopp running” will be held for the very youngest runners up to about 10 years of age. It’s a fun and challenging course where children can experience both movement and joy.
