First race in the Vasaloppet Arena? This guide is for you

Are you new to the Vasaloppet Arena and finding it a lot to keep track of? Don’t worry, it will all work out! Read your start certificate carefully – it contains important information. And make sure you begin your journey to the start in plenty of time, so you don’t have to rush. Once you’ve done that, you can mostly just follow the crowd. Along the way, you’ll have plenty of support from information boards, announcers, signs, experienced participants and thousands of helpful volunteers. If you’d still like to get an overview of what to expect, here’s a quick guide.

This guide mainly applies to Cykelvasan Öppet Spår, Cykelvasan 45, Cykelvasan 30, Cykelvasan 90, Trailvasan 10, Trailvasan 30, Ultravasan 45 and Ultravasan 90.

Start area. The start area is a hive of activity. Loudspeakers play music, interviews, information and helpful advice. There are also large information boards, some of which display Vasaloppet.TV. If you haven’t collected your number bib envelope yet, start with that. Then you can grab something to eat and maybe fit in a final toilet visit.
Packing. When it’s nearly time to start, pack your bag with a change of clothes and make sure the contents are protected from moisture. Then leave that bag at the correct lorry based on your start number. Smart things to carry with you during the race: mobile phone, extra socks and snacks. If you’re cycling, you should also bring an extra inner tube and a repair kit.
The start. The announcer will let you know when your start group can enter the start pen. After that, there may be a warm-up and a countdown before your race begins.
On the way to Mora. It can be crowded at the start of the race, so take it easy and show
consideration – the field will soon spread out. Keep to the right and pass on the left. In the cycling races, remember to keep your distance on descents and don’t stop in the middle of the track. Large signs along the route show how many kilometres remain to Mora and to the next Vasaloppet checkpoint.
Vasaloppet checkpoints. Here you can top up with blueberry soup, sports drink, water,
bananas, gherkins, buns, coffee and other energy. You can also get help with bike repairs, tyre pressure and punctures. All Vasaloppet checkpoints have medical staff and toilets.
The final stretch. If you start feeling tired towards the end and the kilometre signs seem
further and further apart, take your time at the checkpoints and make sure to refuel your energy. A cheer at each kilometre sign is a fun trick to keep yourself and others motivated. But if you’re feeling very tired or unwell, don’t hesitate to ask volunteers or medical staff for help!
The finish. Once you’ve passed through the classic finish line portal (congratulations!), keep moving forward and you’ll pass the chip removal and medal distribution before reaching Mora-Nisse’s Square where a hearty sandwich will be waiting for you. If you’ve cycled, continue by bike to Prästholmen where the showers and your change bag are located. If you’ve run, take a bus to and from Prästholmen. Follow the instructions from our functionaries and you can’t go wrong!
Celebration. When you return to the finish area, remember to collect your diploma. It’s free and makes a great keepsake. Take the opportunity to look around Mora, take photos, maybe have a meal or a coffee and watch others finish their races. If you need to drive home, make sure you’re well rested before getting behind the wheel.
