New registration record for Ultravasan 90 – over 1,600 to run the full Vasaloppet course

Interest in Ultravasan 90 continues to grow, and 2025 is set to be a record-breaking year. Already, with twelve weeks remaining until race day, upwards of 1,600 runners have signed up for the 90-kilometre race that follows the entire classic Vasaloppet route from Sälen to Mora.

This year marks the 12th edition of Ultravasan 90. The race is now firmly established as one of Scandinavia’s premier ultra trail events, attracting both elite athletes and recreational runners from around the world. The trend of extreme long-distance races is strong, and Ultravasan has become an appealing choice for those looking to test their limits. The number of registered runners has already surpassed last year’s record of 1,592.

This year’s race takes place on Saturday, August 16, a day referred to as the “Christmas Eve of ultrarunning” in Sweden. That same day, Ultravasan 45, Trailvasan 30 and Vasastafetten will also be held in the Vasaloppet Arena. Trailvasan 10 and Funkisvasan will take place the day before. As of now, more than 4,700 runners are registered across the six events.

Johan Eriksson, Vasaloppet CEO, is delighted with Sweden’s current running boom and sees every participant as a winner, regardless of distance or pace.
”At the same time, it’s fascinating to see how many are taking on the longest distance, and how mental and physical limits have shifted in recent years.”

”Ahead of the very first Vasaloppet in 1922, there were discussions about whether skiers would be able to manage the full 90 km without stopping overnight – whether it was even possible. So who knows, perhaps Ultravasan 90 will one day reach the same status as Vasaloppet, now that more and more runners are proving the impossible is possible,” says Johan Eriksson.

Many elite runners in the field
With a record number of participants, Ultravasan 90 in 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most spectacular editions yet. Runners from 25 nations are currently registered, and 28% of them are women. The elite field is strong, and winning the race is a highly coveted achievement. A look at the current start lists shows that many of the top 10 finishers from 2024 are already signed up – with new names being added all the time.
